June 2021-22 Newsletter

Yearbook

Our yearbook committee is working hard on getting their publication ready for release by the end of the school year.

Graduation Ceremony

Our graduation will be virtual again this year. We have provided graduating students with a registration link for their families to login in and join our graduation.  The virtual ceremony will take place on June 30th at 1 pm. Further information will be sent to graduates closer to the date.

Graduating Students

This is a reminder to our graduating students that all requested documents should have been submitted by June 17th to prevent delays in your diploma being processed.  Students have been emailed if we are missing documents, so please check your VLC Gmail account.  Graduation packages will be sent out to all graduating students in July via Purolator.  Students should update their Student Notes if their address has changed.

Community Involvement Hours

Students need to collect community involvement hours throughout their time in high school as a requirement for their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). The purpose of mandatory Community Involvement is to encourage students to understand the various roles they can play in their community and to help them develop a greater sense of belonging within the community.

For students graduating in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school year, this number has been reduced to 20 hours as a result of the pandemic.

The Ministry of Education has returned to the 40 hour requirement for students graduating in the 2022-23 school year.

For more information on earning your community involvement hours please visit our website.

The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT)

For students graduating in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school year, the OSSLT requirement for the OSSD has been waived.

Students graduating in the 2022/23 school year will require successful completion of the OSSLT.  Students will be able to write the OSSLT in the Spring of 2023.  More information will be shared with families in the fall.

VLC offered (Careers) and CHV2O (Civics) for summer school this year.  Registration is now closed. Summer school will begin July 4th and run to July 28th, 2022.

If students are taking summer courses elsewhere, they will need to upload their final marks/report card to their Student Profile when they receive it.  If one or more of these courses is a prerequisite for a course next year, please update your Student Notes notifying us what course you are taking and where.

All Independent Learning Centre (ILC) courses taken in the summer must be completed by September 2nd if a student is taking full time (four courses) with the VLC in the fall semester.

If students require any documents or approvals, they can submit their requests to our office: [email protected].

Mrs Kuypers, our Guidance Counsellor, is not available over the summer break.

Report Cards

Final report cards will be sent out to student’s VLC email addresses as well as their parents/guardians’ emails if under 18 by July 8th.  Within the VLC some students may have two final report cards attached to the email with some of their courses listed on each.  Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact us via email ([email protected]).

2022-23 Timetables

By June 30th all students returning in the 2022-23 school year will receive an email notifying them that their timetable is available for the next school year.  The email will go to their VLC Gmail, personal email, and parental/guardian email if they are under 18.

The timetable will tell students what semester they are taking their course(s) in, not their specific class times.  Students will know their live meeting schedules, along with who their teacher is, by September 1st.

Please note, your course timetable may adjust before the school year begins.  If this happens you will be notified via email.

Once you receive this email, students should review their course timetable in their Student Profiles.  Courses for the next year will appear as:

“Selected” – Courses appearing under ‘Selected’ are the courses you have chosen for the upcoming semester. You will be placed in this course unless you are ineligible due to age and grade restriction or you have not met the prerequisite requirement.  You will be emailed if you are ineligible.

“Prerequisite Required” – Courses will appear under ‘Prerequisite Required’ until we have received the requested support documentation (you will be emailed for this). Support documentation should be uploaded to your profile.  See more details in #3.

“Alternate” – Alternate course choices are used if you have selected an ineligible course, or if one of your selected courses becomes full before you submitted the supporting documentation, or if it is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment.

“Waitlisted” – Courses that appear under waitlisted mean that the course was full when you applied, when we received your supporting documentation, or that it was an ineligible course for you due to grade level.  Students will be emailed if they are placed in a waitlisted course.  This can happen up until the first week of September.

Students will be added into courses on September 6th and will review the Student Guide Modules first and then each course to see what is scheduled/assigned that week.   Please keep an eye on the VLC website for updates and please do not contact the office for start-up information, class times or teaching assignments.
