Semester 2 Midterm, 2022-23 Newsletter

Semester 2 Midterm Report Cards

Semester 2 midterm report cards will be sent out to students’ VLC Gmail addresses as well as their parents/guardians’ emails if under 18 by Friday, April 28th, 2023 by 4 pm. Instructions for opening the attachments will be included in the email.

Within the VLC, some students may receive two midterm report cards attached to the email with some of their courses listed on each.

Honour Roll

We have made a shift in our honour roll practices this year. We will still be sending certificates at the end of each semester, however, the calculation will be different. Historically, students who achieved 80% or higher in one or more classes earned honours in the course(s). This year students who maintain an 80% or higher average in all their courses for the semester will receive the certificate.

In addition to the certificate, students who have consented to share their name publicly, as indicated in your registration, will have their name listed on our website. Students who have not given permission to have their name shared publicly will still have their name shared in our Student Guide. If you wish to not have your name shared on either platform please email [email protected]  to let us know.

Summer School

VLC will be offering GLC2O (Careers) and CHV2O (Civics) via summer school.

Registration will open on Monday, May 3th at 11:00 am and close on  Thursday, June 1st at 4 pm.

Summer school will run from July 4th to July 27th, 2023.

Students must login daily.

Exam dates:

GLC20 culminating task is due July 27th at 8:30 am

CHV20 exam is July 27th at 8:30 am

Students must be available to write the exam on the scheduled day and at the scheduled time. No exceptions.

Students can enroll in summer school programs outside of the VLC.  During the summer months, students can take courses with any board.  Students/parents are responsible to register for these courses.  If authorization is required, to confirm a prerequisite has been earned, then students can email their signed forms to our guidance counsellor, Mrs Kuypers.

Technical Support

If students are having technical difficulties they can open a support ticket in Canvas by using the Help menu on the left-hand side and choosing “Report a Problem”. This will go to our support team and a solution will be emailed to the student’s VLC Gmail address.

Final Exams (June 22, 23, 26, 27, 28)

Final exams are scheduled on June 22nd, 23rd, 26th, 27th and 28th.  Specific dates and times for exams are posted on student’s course homepages and have been emailed to families. Please note that all exams will be proctored by Proctorio. For more information visit our website (https://virtuallearning.ca/frequently-asked-questions/what-is-proctorio/).

Failure to write or missing an exam or culminating task deadline without a medical note defending your absence forfeits the credit for the course. Other plans or travel are not conflicts and students are expected to write their exams and hand in their culminating tasks at the scheduled time without exception.

Graduation Ceremony/Year End Social

We are excited to share some information with you about the in-person Graduation Ceremony and Year-End Social taking place on Thursday, June 29th in Lindsay from 10 am to 1 pm.  Location in Lindsay, Ontario address to follow.  The graduation ceremony itself is planned to start at 10:30 am and the social (meet and greet for all students) will take place afterwards.

Students who are not graduating are also able to attend.  There will be limited space so students in their final/graduating year will be given ‘seats’ first.

A survey was posted last week to all students to gauge interest in the event.  An announcement with an official RSVP will be posted in mid-May with full details.

Full Disclosure

Students in senior courses (grade 11/12) have until May 5th at 11:59 pm to withdraw from a course without the course showing up on a transcript.

Details on how to withdraw – see below.

Full disclosure does not apply to students in Grade 9 or 10 courses.

Withdrawals

If you would like to withdraw from a course, and you are under 18, a parent/guardian must email the registrar ([email protected]) with the request from their personal email account.

If you are over 18, you need to notify our office using your student Gmail account that you wish to withdraw from one or more of your courses. You can also log in to your application and update your Student Notes.

If you are attending another publicly funded or private school, your guidance counsellor must email the registrar ([email protected]) with the request.

If a student elects to withdraw, course deposits will be forfeited (if applicable).

Taking Courses Elsewhere

If a homeschooled student is taking courses with the Virtual Learning Centre and would like to enrol in courses from other programs that are privately or publicly funded, including the Independent Learning Centre (ILC), our office needs to be notified ahead of time. Failure to do so may result in withdrawal from our program.

When a student completes any external credits they should upload the final report card to their Student Profile, so the office can help them keep track of their OSSD requirements and ensure they have prerequisites for future courses.  Given our students are homeschooled, it is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to keep track of their OSSD requirements but our office can provide support along the way.  Our guidance counsellor will share resources with students that will help them keep track of these requirements and they can provide assistance with course selection, pathway planning and eventually support them in the graduation and post-secondary process.

Any external credits completed (outside of the VLC) will not be placed on the student’s status/credit counselling sheet or the course requirements credit summary sheet that accompanies the report card until a student’s graduating semester with the VLC.

Please note: students are not eligible to take courses with the Independent Learning Centre (ILC) in their graduating year if they plan on graduating with the VLC.

2023-2024 School Year Registration

Our registration for the 2023-2024 school year is still open. If you have not registered please make sure you do soon. We will be closing registration on May 10th for the 2023-24 school year.

If you have registered please review your Student Profile to ensure all of your documents have been submitted. To access your Student Profile visit our website https://virtuallearning.ca/ and choose “Student Profile” from the left hand menu. Applications with outstanding documents on May 10th will be deleted and course spaces offered to students on the waiting list.

If you are currently in the prerequisite course, or taking the prerequisite in the summer, we will leave the course as “Pending” until the prerequisite has been completed (must be before September 1st).  Please ensure you have updated your Student Notes to let us know you are taking the prerequisite course in the summer if you have not already done so.

Home School Letters

Each academic year students who are homeschooled are required to provide us with a copy of their homeschool letter of intent. This document must be submitted to the local board where you reside. A copy of the letter must be uploaded to your Student Profile.

When you receive your confirmation letter back from your home board, upload this to your Student Profile. Confirmation letters are due before September 1st, 2023.
