Semester 2 Midterm Newsletter, 2023-24

Graduation Ceremony/Year End Social

We are excited to share some information with you about the in-person Graduation Ceremony and Year-End Social taking place on Thursday, June 27th in Lindsay from 10 am to 1 pm.  Location is at the VLC Office building on 230 Angeline Street South, Lindsay. The graduation ceremony itself is planned to start at 10:30 am and the social (meet and greet for all students) will take place afterwards.

Students who are not graduating are also able to attend. There will be limited space so students in their final/graduating year will be given ‘seats’ first.  Graduating students have already been provided with the RSVP form to complete before May 10th.

The RSVP form will be made available to the rest of the student body on May 13th in a Student Guide announcement.

Semester 2 Midterm Report Cards

Semester 2 midterm report cards were sent out to students’ VLC Gmail addresses as well as their parents/guardians’ emails if under 18 on April 23rd. Instructions for opening the attachments will be included in the email.

Within the VLC, some students may receive two midterm report cards attached to the email with some of their courses listed on each.

Any external credits completed (prior to, or outside of the VLC) will not be placed on the student’s status/credit counselling sheet or the course requirements credit summary sheet that accompanies the report card until a student’s graduating semester with the VLC.

Withdrawals

If you would like to withdraw from a course, and you are under 18, a parent/guardian must email the registrar ([email protected]) with the request from their personal email account.

If you are over 18, you need to notify our office using your student Gmail account that you wish to withdraw from one or more of your courses. You can also log in to your application and update your Student Notes.

If you are attending another publicly funded or private school, your guidance counsellor must email the registrar ([email protected]) with the request.

If a student elects to withdraw, course deposits will be forfeited (if applicable).

Summer School

The VLC will not be running summer school in the summer 2024 semester.

Students can enroll in summer school programs outside of the VLC. During the summer months, students can take courses with any board. Students/parents are responsible to register for these courses. If authorization is required, to confirm a prerequisite has been earned, then students can email their signed forms to our guidance counsellor, Mrs Kuypers.

Taking Courses Elsewhere During the School Year

If a homeschooled student is taking courses with the Virtual Learning Centre and would like to enrol in courses from other programs that are privately or publicly funded, including the Independent Learning Centre (ILC), our office needs to be notified ahead of time. Failure to do so may result in withdrawal from our program.

When a student completes any external credits they should upload the final report card to their Student Profile, so the office can help them keep track of their OSSD requirements and ensure they have prerequisites for future courses.  Given our students are homeschooled, it is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to keep track of their OSSD requirements but our office can provide support along the way. Our guidance counsellor has shared resources with students that will help them keep track of these requirements. Our guidance counsellor can also provide assistance with course selection, pathway planning and eventually support students in the graduation and post-secondary process.

As mentioned previously, any external credits completed (prior to, or outside of the VLC) will not be placed on the student’s status/credit counselling sheet or the course requirements credit summary sheet that accompanies the report card until a student’s graduating semester with the VLC.

Please note: students are not eligible to take courses with the Independent Learning Centre (ILC) in their graduating year if they plan on graduating with the VLC.

Zoom Recordings

We have had a number of students who are having difficulty with accessing Zoom. Here is a link to the support document that will walk you through step by step on how to login to Zoom so you can access your Zoom classes and recordings (this is also found in the student guide).  Accessing Zoom We encourage students to ensure they don’t skip steps 7 & 8.

Last day to hand in overdue work

The last day to submit all overdue work is June 7th at 12 pm (noon).  I suggest students do not wait until the last day to submit all of their work. Please note this date may not apply to tests which have had answers released to students.

ISUs and culminating activities may be due after this day and you must adhere to those deadlines.

Final Exams (June 20, 21, 24, 25, 26)

Final exams are scheduled on June 20th, 21st, 24th, 25th, and 26th.  Specific dates and times for exams have been posted on student’s course homepages and have been emailed to families. Please note that all exams will be proctored by Proctorio. For more information visit our website (https://virtuallearning.ca/frequently-asked-questions/what-is-proctorio/).

Failure to write or missing an exam or culminating task deadline without a medical note defending your absence forfeits the credit for the course. Other plans or travel are not conflicts and students are expected to write their exams and hand in their culminating tasks at the scheduled time without exception.

2024-2025 School Year Registration

Our registration for the 2024-2025 school year is still open. If you have not registered please make sure you do soon. We will be closing registration on May 10th for the 2024-25 school year at 10:00 AM.

If you have registered please review your Student Profile to ensure all of your documents have been submitted. To access your Student Profile visit our website https://virtuallearning.ca/ and choose “Student Profile” from the left hand menu. Applications with outstanding documents on May 10th will be deleted and course spaces offered to students on the waiting list.

If you are currently in the prerequisite course, or taking the prerequisite in the summer, we will leave the course as “Pending” until the prerequisite has been completed (must be before September 1st).  Please ensure you have updated your Student Notes to let us know you are taking the prerequisite course in the summer if you have not already done so.

2024-2025 Exam Dates

The exam period for semester 1 will be January 24-30 and semester 2 exams will run from June 19-25. All students must be available for the entire exam period. All VLC exams are proctored by Proctorio, more information can be found on our website.

Home School Letters

Each academic year students who are homeschooled are required to provide us with a copy of their homeschool letter of intent. This document must be submitted to the local board where you reside. A copy of the letter must be uploaded to your Student Profile.

When you receive your confirmation letter back from your home board, upload this to your Student Profile. Confirmation letters are due before September 1st, 2024.

Technical Support

If students are having technical difficulties they can open a support ticket in Canvas by using the Help menu on the left-hand side and choosing “Report a Problem”. This will go to our support team and a solution will be emailed to the student’s VLC Gmail address.
